A message from the president and founding partner, Brigitte Rau:

Dear lovely customers and connoisseurs of truly organic, wholesome, soulful and handmade skin care: we bid you farewell. It has been a fabulous ride, meaningful and much fun, creating skin care that has been loved and needed by many.

My husband Jon and I started Organic Soaps And Balms  in 2001. After 18 years, we have closed up shop. We will be on a sabbatical, spending time with family in Europe. During that time we will evaluate possibilities to continue the business. Even though we went from manufacturing in our home kitchen and selling on the farmer’s market to a commercial facility and selling nationwide, including at Whole Foods, we were not able to gain a supporting market share.

Organic Soaps And Balms, a certified organic manufacturer of body care for super-sensitive skin, splits with the Organic Trade Association (OTA) over OTA's support of the DARK Act.

The DARK (Deny Americans their Right to know) Act, the law that pre-empted Vermont’s and all other state’s mandatory GMO labeling laws, was passed in July with the support of OTA's board. Even though 90% of Americans want to know if GMOs are in their food, until a new national law is implemented, which can take years, Americans will not know if GMOs are in their food.

Washing your hands with antibacterial soap containing triclosan – the most common microbe-killing ingredient used in these soaps – may be no better than ordinary plain soap, according to South Korean researchers.

Moreover, antibacterial soap products contain chemical ingredients, such as triclosan and triclocarban, which may carry unnecessary risks given that their benefits are unproven. There are indications that certain ingredients in these soaps may contribute to bacterial resistance to antibiotics, and may have unanticipated hormonal effects that are of concern to FDA.
